SERGIO
Avarice & Arrogance
Chapter 30
Sergio was soaking in the spa tub, his muscles slowly unclenching after the grueling practice polo match earlier in the day. At forty-four, he was twenty years senior to the young, buff studs he was coaching for the tournament. So while the guys were out bar-hopping in downtown Santa Barbara no doubt picking up hot senoritas, here he was dreaming about a nap before dinner.
Ah, but he could recall the glory days so clearly. The Olympics where he won silver for Argentina in the equestrian event. The years of playing superb offense, leading his country’s team to victory in the world Polo Championships. The gleaming medals, the shiny rings, the sexy groupies, the cases of Dom Perignon. The celebrations that lasted all night long.
He was aware he still turned female heads when entering a room though to his chagrin the age of the ladies who stared seductively had risen from twenty-two to thirty-two. At least his two true loves would never mind his greying hair and aging muscles, his fleet of polo ponies and his wine cellar filled with Melendez Malbec Reserva wine.
The pampered middle child of an affluent family, Sergio had been educated at prestigious private schools in Buenos Aires. Brilliant at his studies and a star athlete in school sports, he became bored swiftly, acquiring a reputation for seducing young ladies, then quickly moving on, always bestowing a sparkly parting gift to help to heal their broken hearts.
Sergio enjoyed spending summers at his family’s winery and estate in the high altitude wine region of Lujan de Cuyo in Mendoza. Located in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, the Melendez vineyards were reputed to produce some of Argentina’s most superior-rated malbec wines. The Melendez Reserva wines boasted a deep cherry red color, with mineral expressions of sweet spices and black fruit. Malbec connoisseurs enjoyed the wine’s taste of sugary, silky tannins. Willing to pay exorbitant prices for select bottles aged in oak barrels, emitting aromas of chocolate, coffee or vanilla.
Upon graduating from university, Sergio continued to divide his time between professional sports and managing the world-wide distribution of his family’s vast wine conglomerate. The years of constant travel suited his quick mind and kept boredom at bay. It also provided an excuse not to marry. With his older brother and younger sister satisfying his parent’s dreams for weddings and grandchildren, his relatives finally stopped their machinations of finding him a suitable wife.
Gorgeous, sensual young women were easy prey for a wealthy, fit, swarthily handsome guy with a bad-boy party lifestyle. Only one woman had sparked deeper, lasting feelings, yet Sergio had let her slip away. Perfect timing was the key to success and happiness, so he had waited — cyberstalking his perfect love until they could be reunited.
Finally, that incredible moment came when she had reached out across the world to seek his heart and free her soul. He had responded with a fantastic plan that only they could pull off…together. His patience, intricate planning, and persistence had succeeded, and the end game was near.
